Geospatial information is of key importance in agriculture because much agricultural data is spatial in nature. The standardization of geospatial information began in the 1980s with the growing influence of geographic information systems (GIS). These standards were originally focused on software and hardware standards that were locked by a specific vendor. Today, many of these standards are administered and published by the OGC.
